Don’t let your landlord overcharge you!
You are most likely rent-stabilized if you live in a building built prior to January 1, 1974 that has 6 or more apartments. Rent-stabilized tenants have many rights, including protections against illegal rent increases. To figure out if you are paying the correct rent amount, you can request your rent history from the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR).
Don’t accept an illegal rent increase!
The Rent Guidelines Board sets maximum legal rent increases. For renewal leases starting between October 1, 2022 & September 30, 2023, you have the option to renew for one or two years at these set increases:
1 year lease renewal:
3.25%
2 year lease renewal:
5%
You have these options to request your rent history:
Text RENT HISTORY to (646) 783-0627 and get your rent history from DHCR in the mail via the JustFix.nyc text bot. Once you follow the prompts, you will receive your rent history in your mailbox within 2-3 business days.
E-mail rentinfo@nyshcr.org and in the subject line type “Rent History for [Your Full Address]” and in the body of the email say that you are requesting a full rent history and include your full name and address, including apartment number.
Call DHCR at (718) 739-6400. Press 1 for English and then 7 to speak with a representative to ask them for a full rent history.
